…run, don’t walk, to rent this movie… November 28, 2008

I Netflixed probably one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s an HBO movie called ‘Iron Jawed Angels’ staring Hilary Swank as Alice Paul. If you don’t know Alice Paul, look her up…she changed lives of all women in America. 1903-1923 Alice Paul and Lucy Burns form the National Woman’s Party and begin a campaign of non-violent protest resulting in the ratification of the 19th amendment. By 1924 all women in the United States had the right to vote.

I had to choke back tears during this movie. I had no idea how bad these women were treated during their imprisonment. They risked their lives, their families, their freedom, because they believed. Alice Paul believed in her heart that as a taxed-without-representation member of society, every woman deserved a voice. She didn’t care for whom women voted. That wasn’t the point. The point was that they have constitutional right to vote.

After watching this movie, I cannot imagine ever passing up the opportunity to vote in this country. If you are a woman and you choose not to vote…you should be ashamed of yourself. What Alice Paul and others went through to give you this right is beyond explanation. YOU OWE THEM. They were amazing women of courage, honor and determination.

I’ve heard people ask “if you could choose 10 people, dead or alive, to have dinner with, who would it be?”, Alice Paul just moved to the top of my list.
