…run, don’t walk, to rent this movie… November 28, 2008

I Netflixed probably one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s an HBO movie called ‘Iron Jawed Angels’ staring Hilary Swank as Alice Paul. If you don’t know Alice Paul, look her up…she changed lives of all women in America. 1903-1923 Alice Paul and Lucy Burns form the National Woman’s Party and begin a campaign of non-violent protest resulting in the ratification of the 19th amendment. By 1924 all women in the United States had the right to vote.

I had to choke back tears during this movie. I had no idea how bad these women were treated during their imprisonment. They risked their lives, their families, their freedom, because they believed. Alice Paul believed in her heart that as a taxed-without-representation member of society, every woman deserved a voice. She didn’t care for whom women voted. That wasn’t the point. The point was that they have constitutional right to vote.

After watching this movie, I cannot imagine ever passing up the opportunity to vote in this country. If you are a woman and you choose not to vote…you should be ashamed of yourself. What Alice Paul and others went through to give you this right is beyond explanation. YOU OWE THEM. They were amazing women of courage, honor and determination.

I’ve heard people ask “if you could choose 10 people, dead or alive, to have dinner with, who would it be?”, Alice Paul just moved to the top of my list.

Women!!! Get out and vote today! The women in the photo above fought for our right to vote in this country.

It is YOUR right. It is YOUR obligation.

Don’t let these women down! Thank you to all the women who fought for our right to vote. You were smart, beautiful, courageous and determined and we appreciate all that you accomplished.

a great little get-away November 2, 2008

KV surprised me with a St. Louis get-away this weekend!

We visited the Arch of course, which is insanely large and makes you say “wow”!

We then visited the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. Hands down one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. More than 41 million mosaic tiles. Yes…I said million. More than 8,000 different colors. Makes my head explode thinking of all the detail work, design, color, technique. It is gorgeous. I highly recommend.

After grabbing a slice of pizza and enjoying a perfect autumn afternoon, we drove over to Forest Park. It’s huge, beautiful, historic and fun. Wish we’d had more time to wander around. It would be the perfect place to explore on bicycles.

Best part of the weekend? Spending lots and lots of time with my favorite person on the planet. It means the world to me to have him in my life and share great adventures. Hope it’s the start of many more to come. 🙂
